Cold calling is one way to bring in new clients. For some people, it works well. For most people, it feels like dialing strangers and hoping for the best.
The good news is that cold calling is not the only option. Not even close. If the idea of picking up the phone and pitching someone you've never met makes your stomach turn, there are five approaches that work just as well, sometimes better, and don't require that kind of nerve.
1. Build a Referral System (Not a Referral Hope)
Most small businesses get some referrals. Very few have a real system for generating them. There's a big difference between hoping a happy client mentions your name and actually building a process that makes referrals happen regularly.
A referral system is simple. You ask for referrals at the right moment, usually right after a client gets a win. You make it easy for them to refer you by giving them the exact words to use or a direct link to your scheduling page. And you follow up with a thank-you when a referral comes in.
Referrals are warm leads. They already trust you before they ever talk to you, because someone they trust vouched for you. That makes the whole sales process shorter and easier.
2. Show Up Consistently on LinkedIn
LinkedIn is not just a place to post your resume. For B2B service providers and consultants, it is one of the best places to be visible to the exact people you want to reach.
You don't need to post every day. You need to post consistently. Two to three times a week, sharing something useful, something real, or something that shows how you think. Comment on other people's posts. Connect with people in your target market without immediately pitching them.
Over time, the right people start to notice. When they need what you offer, you're already familiar.
3. Use Email to Stay Top of Mind With Warm Leads
Most leads are not ready to buy the first time they hear from you. That doesn't mean they're not interested. It means they need more time, more trust, or more of the right moment.
Email is how you stay in front of them without being pushy. A simple monthly or biweekly email that shares something helpful keeps your name in their inbox. When they're finally ready to move forward, you're the first person they think of.
This is especially effective combined with an email nurture sequence for new leads. If someone reaches out and then goes quiet, a few well-timed emails can bring them back into the conversation.
4. Let Your Website Do the Work
Your website should be generating leads while you sleep. If it isn't, something is off. Most small business websites answer the wrong questions, talk too much about the owner, and make it confusing for a visitor to take the next step. Run this quick small business website audit to find out where yours stands.
A website that generates clients is clear about who it serves, what problem it solves, and what to do next. The call to action is obvious. The page loads fast on a phone. And the right people can actually find it on Google.
If your site isn't doing any of that, it's costing you clients every single week. Check out our services page to see how we help businesses fix exactly this.
5. Partner With Businesses That Serve the Same Client
Think about who else your ideal client hires. A bookkeeper's ideal client also hires an accountant, a business coach, maybe a web designer. A home stager's ideal client is also working with a real estate agent.
Strategic partnerships with non-competing businesses that serve the same audience can send a steady stream of warm referrals your way. You refer to them. They refer to you. Everyone wins, especially the client.
Start with two or three businesses where there's natural overlap. Reach out, build a real relationship, and look for ways to send value their direction first.
More clients only helps if they're the right clients. Before your next yes, ask these four questions that qualify a potential client. Not sure which of the five to start with?
