Most marketing plans sit in a folder and collect dust. They're too long, too complicated, or written so far in advance that they have nothing to do with what the business actually needs right now.

A 1-page marketing plan is different. It's short enough to use every week. It's focused enough to actually guide your decisions. And it's built around how customers actually buy, not how businesses think they buy.

Why Most Marketing Plans Don't Work

The average marketing plan fails for one simple reason. It's built to be filed away, not used daily.

It's full of goals, tactics, timelines, and budgets that made sense when you wrote them but quickly become irrelevant. Nobody reads it. Nobody references it. It becomes background noise.

A plan you don't use is not actually a plan. It's a document that makes you feel like you have a plan. There's a big difference. Without a real plan, marketing turns into a hamster wheel of random activity that never builds anything.

What the 1-Page Marketing Plan Actually Covers

The 1-page marketing plan, based on a framework developed by author Allan Dib, is organized around three phases of the customer journey: Before, During, and After.

Each phase asks you to answer just a few focused questions. That's it. When you're done, the whole thing fits on one page, and you can actually use it to make decisions week after week.

Before Phase: Getting the Right People to Notice You

The Before Phase

This is everything you do to reach people who don't know you yet and turn them into warm prospects.

The before phase is about your target market, your message, and your media. Who are you trying to reach? What problem do they have that you solve? Where do they spend time, online or in person, where you can reach them? If that place is social media, consistency matters more than perfect content.

Most businesses are too vague here. "Small business owners" is not a target market. "Women-owned businesses in Pittsburgh with 5 to 15 employees who are overwhelmed by marketing" is a target market. The more specific you are, the more effective your marketing will be.

Your message needs to speak directly to the problem your target market is feeling right now. Not what you do, but what they get and why it matters to them.

During Phase: Turning Interest Into a First Sale

The During Phase

This is everything you do to convert a warm prospect into a paying client for the first time.

Most businesses skip the during phase entirely. A prospect shows interest, and the business either closes them immediately or lets them fall through the cracks. There's no middle ground.

The during phase is about your lead nurture process, your sales process, and how you handle the conversion from "interested" to "hired." This includes your email nurture sequence, your consultation process, and your first offer.

Think about what needs to be true for someone to say yes to working with you. What questions do they need answered? What fears do they need addressed? What does that process look like from their side?

After Phase: Turning Clients Into Loyal Fans and Referral Sources

The After Phase

This is everything you do after the first sale to build loyalty, generate repeat business, and get referrals.

The after phase is where most small businesses leave the most money on the table. You work hard to get a client, do great work, and then... nothing. No follow-up system. No referral ask. No way to stay in touch between projects.

The after phase asks: How do you deliver an amazing experience? How do you stay in touch after the engagement ends? How do you ask for referrals and make them easy to give? How do you create repeat business?

Clients who feel cared for after the sale are the ones who refer everyone they know.

How to Use Your 1-Page Plan Every Week

The point of a 1-page plan is that you actually look at it. Print it out. Put it somewhere visible. Every Monday, spend five minutes reviewing it. Ask yourself: what did we do last week in each phase? What will we do this week?

That simple weekly check-in keeps your marketing from going dark for six weeks and then scrambling to catch up.
